Self-Ageup Quality Guidelines

The below resource does not cover all applicable variables.

Please contact Deertush for any further concerns.

At MINIMUM your reference must have:

  • A Flatcolor front view (unclothed)

  • A list of traits/mutations/body mods

  • A color palette

ANATOMY

ANATOMY / STYLIZATION

Your faun is not required to be in “faunid style” but must still be recognizable as their respective deer species. Antlers must be based in realism.

  1. “Chibi” and “cutesy” style is still recognizable as a deer species.

  2. Drawn realism.

  3. Stylized semi-realism.

  4. Moderate stylization where the relative deer species can be identified.

4.png
  1. Styles based on mainstream media are not allowed(MLP, Lion King, etc.)

  2. Overly stylized anatomy that is no longer recognizable.

  3. Anatomy must be correct and make sense.

  4. Stylization may not create “faux traits” due to exaggeration.

3.png

LINEART

LINEART

The lineart for your faunid should be visible, non-obtrusive, OPAQUE, and CLEAN.

  1. Textured lineart but still clean.

  2. Minor shading and solid linework, but non-obtrusive to the design.

  3. Thin lineart that is visible.

  4. Weighted lineart that never breaks.

2.png
  1. Construction lines should not be visible.

  2. Heavy lineart cannot obscure the design.

  3. Lineart should not be broken and should be continuous.

  4. Lineart should not be “sketchy” / “scratchy”.

TANGENTS

TANGENTS

A tangent is a line that is touching but not intersecting another line.

Within art, tangents cause visual confusion and overall weaker subjects.

A full writeup of types of tangents is linked HERE.

  1. Try to have limbs and significant areas completely overlap,

  2. Don't have more than two or three lines meet together.

  3. Remember: tangents also occur within coloring.

  4. Either cross over borders or stay well within them, don't be right on the edge.

COLOR

COLORING

This section does not cover how markings appear in relation to the fawn image. Only the actual appearance and quality of coloring is what is specified in this section.

  1.  Replicating the marking style.

  2.  Softening markings.

  3.  Sharpening markings.

  4. Both softening and sharpening markings.

5.png
  1. Markings should not be drawn with an overly textured brush unless it was also done on the fawn originally.

  2. Color must remain inside the lines.

  3. Markings must be similar in proportion and shape to that of the fawn.

  4. The entirety of the reference should be flat color and "color pickable".

6.png

SHADE

SHADING

If ANY shading is on the reference, an unshaded version must also be supplied upon submission. If you are unsure of what constitutes as too much shading, please only submit and unshaded version for official usage.

  1. Cell-shading (hard edge) shading.

  2. Cell shading with partial airbrush erasing.

  3. Small highlights.

  4. Shading with multiple shades.

8.png
  1. Shading should be VERY simple and never obstruct an entire marking.

  2. Fully gradient/airbrush/pillow shading is not allowed.

  3. Shading should be light in value and not distracting.

  4. Do not paint.

7.png

GRAPHIC
DESIGN

GRAPHIC DESIGN

The color palette and traits should be placed within the image. Any additional information should be visually appealing and compliment the image reference. Below are some official faunids you can use as a guide or inspiration.

  1. When using color shapes behind the image, use colors that compliment or reflect the design.

  2. Do not use more than 3 different fonts.

  3. All text should be readable against its background.

  4. Simpler is better if you are new to graphic design.

Marking Adjustment Guidelines

The below resource does not cover all applicable variables.

Please contact Deertush for any further concerns.

COLOR

COLOR

Any adjusted marking colors must still be in the color group/family of the original design’s marking. If the marking is blue, it must stay recognizably blue.

  1. Saturation can be slightly adjusted.

  2. Can be shifted to a more vibrant/brighter version of that color.

  3. Slight hue shifting is allowed within the color “family”.

  4. Can be a darker value/brightness.

6.png
  1. You cannot drastically de/saturate a color or vice versa.

  2. The color must remain the same color. In this case, yellow.

  3. Additional colors cannot be added.

  4. While in the same “family”, this is too far from the original brightness.

5.png

SHAPE

SHAPE

The aged faunid must have (at minimum) remnants of the original design’s marking. Any changes must still adhere to the basic shape design of the original.

The "ghost" of the original marking can be seen below as reference.

  1. Sections(<50%) can be faded or removed.

  2. Additional markings can be added but should not be major.

  3. Another example of additional markings/marking extension.

  4. Another example of subtle fading of the marking

4.png
  1. Extensive marking additions not permitted even if it is following other patterns.

  2. Read Above.

  3. Unwarranted and foreign designs to the original are not allowed.

  4. Complete removal is not allowed.

3.png

OTHER

OTHER EXAMPLES

The below images are further examples of possible marking adjustments as well as things that would NOT be acceptable.

  1. Shape adjustment.

  2. Shrunken version of original marking.

  3. Shape adjustment and extending existing color.

  4. Reducing size as well as color adjustment

2.png
  1. Unwarranted marking pattern.

  2. Total marking erasure.

  3. The color is too far from the original.

  4. The color is too bright.

Self-Ageup Reference Checklist

All questions below must be able to be answered with “yes” excluding those with “*”.
If you answer no, feel free to contact staff
or post in #art-help for assistance.

This list is for you to go through to make sure your reference follows the guidelines. Do not post this list in your submission.

- Does the marking and color quality look like the fawning reference? - Am I confident my anatomy is correct? - Is my resolution(DPI) 300 or higher? - Have I included a comprehensible color palette? - Are all of my colors within the lines? - Are my lines opaque and clean? - Is my image transparent? - Is my signature on the reference? - Is my reference readable?

Frequently Asked Questions

The information below is a compilation of repeated questions we receive or "basic" questions that are/were answered elsewhere.

How do I officially age up my fawn by myself?

Aging a fawn up without the work of an official artist is possible with this method. You will be required to have art of your grown fawn supplied by yourself or someone you commissioned. Once the age-up is done, the OWNER of the fawn will submit a post with a filled out form (supplied above). A staff member will contact the poster with further direction.

Can I give my fawn body modifications?

As long as these modifications cannot be confused with a trait, you can! Please ask and make sure beforehand though. The only mod not allowed is full tail docking as you would be unable to see the tail trait of the faunid. If a mod affects an existing trait, an unmodified version of the trait must be pictured on the reference somewhere (EXCEPT for perma velvet).

Why are there official age-ups that don't follow the rules?

In order to make this guide possible, set rules and guidelines are required to be put into place. This gives both staff and users a clear basis on what is or is not allowed. Official artists are allowed to adjust according to the desires of the commission since the quality is consistent and does not require heavy editing. All art on site has to be approved, even official art.

If I do all the work, why is there still a fee?

Faunid fees, event store purchases, etc. all go towards keeping the site’s domain which requires an annual fee. You can bypass a fee if you are gifted or win a self-age up.

Is my art good enough for a self age-up?

It’s hard to say. Within this page, we cover art quality guidelines and requirements. Constructive critiques are always available before submission.

Can I have the feathers/fluff shorter/longer?

You can have fluff grow to any reasonable length in accordance to the trait, short or long. Fluff cannot change texture type (curly, guardian, wavy, etc.) The shape of the feather cannot change and must resemble the trait as seen on the parent faunid(s). If this trait was a blessing, any reasonable size and shape is allowed.

What can I have on my reference?

At minimum, you must include a front flatcolor view of the faunid. You are allowed to include extras such as back views, clothing, and props.

Can I modify a trait?

Yes! Since traits are now listed on all references, traits can be modified in various ways. However, the trait still must be recognizable and must resemble the trait as shown on the parent(s).

Can I use a base outside of the ones provided?

No. You can use other bases for unofficial references, but not for the website submission. We simply want to avoid any issues that may be caused by the guidelines and rules place therefore by the original base's owner.

Are we supposed to use the parents as a trait guide?

If the given trait is not easily visible on the fawn's image, then it is recommended that you use the parent(s) as a reference to how the trait should display. It does not need to be 1:1, but it must be recognizabley similar.

My fawn's original image shows the trait different than on the parent.

Due to the mass amount of fawns that are requested, trait lineart is reused for some fawns to save on time. Unfortunately, this means that it may not totally look like the parent(s) version of the trait. In this case, it is best suggested that you reference the parent to guarantee that it will pass inspection.

What are the rules for (insert unlisted trait)?

If you are confused how you can draw a trait, try to look for other faunids who express the same trait. Otherwise, please contact Deertush.
